"This is what she wrote......"

 Image transfer on old book page with gesso undercoat & cobalt blue acrylic around the edge of the pages.
I found this image a long time ago in a National Geographic magazine.
When I paint I brush excess paint onto old book pages etc. As I did this I noticed the words " this is what she wrote" at the top of the right hand page....this page just so happened to be the one I had chosen for this image transfer........so this was my inspiration for this artwork.

Drawing over a dry watery coat of burnt sienna with pen, added some colour to the drawing with watercolour pencils.

 Collaged a paper border with printed handwriting on it onto the canvas board.

 Then added the book page with gel medium. When it was dry I added the corner collage pieces.

  Last of all crayon which I smudged with my fingers to soften the overall appearance of this picture.

Red Roses - Collage & Acrylic on Canvas

 starting at the end...... red roses painted with acrylic & a palette knife over old painted book pages......& the beginning.........painted book pages glued onto  a 24"x24" canvas with gel medium, ( when i paint with acrylic paint i like to wipe the excess paint from my brush onto old book pages or note books to use in  future collage paintings).....

....some paint  & splatter & drip layers .......

 the original inspiration......red  roses in a glass coffee jar......

 adding acrylic with a palette knife, leaving bits of the first layer of the book page images showing through the paint....

.....a lot of trial & error with the composition of the roses & getting a shape to resemble a rose without too much detail.

More scraps and bits

I have been building a scrap book...

this "notebook" magazine I kept because it helped inspire us to start this blog...

it's a solid magazine, holding together well...

and the cover was ripped off...

 so I'm now going through all those scraps of paper...

that I've collected over the years...

pleasing images or ideas and instructions for projects...

and gluing them all into one place...

the interesting stories are kept...

gluing only happens on the advertisements...

 then I sorted this old wooden box...

it held a jumble of sewing bits...

ribbons, zips, needles, etc...

the 3 litre milk bottles fitted just nicely...

so I trimmed them to fit inside...

ta da...no more tangled mess...

 the inside of the book cover, i used the black outside of the cover.....

 painted book pages, torn for collage....& torn magazine pages,.......a vintage theme.....

paper doily & gel medium to create some texture.....

for these pages i am using an old business diary  ......this page began with a print of a photo i took when i was in Sydney a few months ago, of salvaged timbers used for a shop counter.
 there isn't much of the photo left to be seen under the layers of papers from magazines.
 the colours of the timber inspired the final scheme for the collage.....yellows, pinks, reds & browns. it looked ok at the flower stage but i thought it needed something else......so the bird & the butterflies completed the picture.
sometimes i finish a page, depending on how much time i have .......other days i start the page but don't get quite finished.......so if some of these pages look incomplete that 's why.

here i have used the background that was cut away from the bird  as the base with some pieces of a local map, from 2002, & different papers from magazines, a camera instruction book & a used postage stamp. a wash of watercolour & a stencil, painted paper from an old sketch book, a picture from a fashion book, found at the op shop. this one i think is incomplete at this stage.

 a watercolour wash to begin with,...... i love playing the run & drip game with watercolours, hessian strip, tea stained paper doilies, brown paper hearts & an angel cut from wrapping paper.

and........heaps of hearts cut from old books & brown paper adhered to the back of envelopes!

 can you guess what's inside the envelopes ?

more watercolour play,.... a crow  & a quote cut from a children's story book.

i have been painting the spare bedroom........from mauve to white, so this was a quick page of blue masking tape used in the painting process. all it needed was the red butterfly........done!

walls also done!.......now for the re decorating. one of my favourite things to do. it's like beginning a painting with a bright new white canvas!

Inspiration

A cushion cover made from different bits of fabric, some given to me , some found at op-shops. Inspired by......

....... "etc." - creating beautiful interiors with the things you love. by Sibella Court. I found this book at the library. As soon as i opened it I knew i would love it!

I was inspired by the Introduction: "This book is about slapdash styling & deconstructed decorating solutions. It's filled with things that inspire me & may in turn excite you or trigger ideas for your own home. My hope is that when you flick through the pages you'll begin to look at your possessions from a new perspective & be encouraged to confidently reshuffle, pin, paint, paste, scribble, & organise your interiors so they feel all shiny & new (even if all you love is weathered & old!)".
